Welcome to the training modules section of the FarmElder project.
Before you start reading and working through the courses, we would like to give you an overview of the training modules developed and give you a brief introduction to their application. Please read this introduction carefully to gain as many skills and knowledge as possible from this course.
Before we started working on the training modules, we carried out research to identify the main problems and challenges of social farming with elderly people. We analysed existing material and studies, talked to practitioners and looked at examples from the field.
Undertaking comprehensive research have enabled us to identify those areas in which there is a need for further training opportunities. The results of the research and the case studies are now available as publications on the FarmElder website (www.farmelder.eu) and recommended reading during the course.
The training modules provide specific information about social farming for elders and give an insight into the practice as well as inspiring stories, especially for those who are thinking about getting more involved and providing social services on their own farm.
We recommend that you study the modules in depth and not rush through them. Take your time and perhaps go through them several times – perhaps again and again if necessary.
Depending on your learning speed and the unit in question, you should take at least 45-60 minutes to work through each unit in full.
We have designed the training modules so that they can be used throughout Europe and are equally useful to a wide range of readers.
How to use the training modules:
The elderly people in Europe
In this unit, you will learn about the demographic changes in Europe and how these will affect the elderly in the coming years. As well as giving some examples of the challenges it will also give you an insight into how these issues could be addressed.
Needs and challenges of elderly people
You will learn about the needs of older people, the challenges they face and the benefits, risks, threats and opportunities in rural areas. It helps to understand what elderly people feel and this knowledge helps to understand their needs.
Social services on a farm for different kinds of older people
In this learning unit, different options for social services on farms are presented. Although they are all aimed at older people, they can vary greatly in form and scope. The services are each illustrated with examples from the FarmElder case studies.
Soft skills when working with elderly people
This module provides an understanding of soft skills and the importance of communication, resolving conflict and enables learners to reflect on the impact of social farmers’ work with older people.
Cooperation and communication in the sector
This unit provides you with basic communication skills and shows you how to build a successful cooperation/partnership. This includes identifying needs, defining the area of cooperation and what is important when looking for to create a partnership.
Telling the story of social farming for the elderly
This unit provides you with the basic knowledge of how to communicate the activities of your farm. It shows you how to create and successfully present the story of your farm.
